Mother

Thank you to every child that birthed a mother

the moment it implanted,

a placental tunnel into her soul.

Long before the no’s of terrible twos

Or the pangs of teenage angst

The umbilical they thought they severed at birth, unbeknownst

Had already ensnarled her heart

with the constant walkie talkie of dialog

Her own labor pains

lay forgotten in the wails of the first cry,

her every action now directed

to protect her offspring with a fervour

That defied her diminutive stature

Didn’t matter if they were rich or poor,

extrovert or introvert,

wanderer or a philosopher,

all became the very same magical creature

called a mother, the creator and protector

The God

that people searched high and low,

in heavens and words

Lay in plain sight

long before their births.

Happy Mother’s Day to mothers, grandmothers,

and all those who mother one way or another.
